About Us
The Festival of Voices is Tasmania’s leading winter cultural event and Australia’s premier festival celebrating the vocalist and the power of song. The Festival reflects the unique blend of characteristics within our local community – independence, generosity, warmth, diversity, and authenticity. We are an inclusive event of learning, performing and celebrating that is unique in Australia.
Now in our 7th year, we shine a light on the diverse power of the instrument of voice, and offer the opportunity to both be a participant and an audience member, through our unique workshop program and concert series. Across dozens of events and for more than 10,000 singers and audience members, we showcase a range of artistic disciplines, including choir and ensemble singing, spoken word, cabaret, debate, poetry, storytelling and hiphop.
Our workshop program offers learning and performance opportunities for singers of all ages, abilities and experience. Since it began the Festival has attracted some of the world's most loved and respected vocal teachers, including Horace Boyer (teacher of Aretha Franklin), Myron Butler (Grammy Award winner), Mike Brewer (OBE), Lyn Williams (OAM), Mark O'Leary, Simon Kenway, Malcolm Dalglish, Austin Willacy and Tony Backhouse.
Our performance program covers events both intimate (such as solo vocal events) and grand (such as the the Finale Concert at the Federation Concert Hall. We also celebrate community with the Bonfire & Big Sing, with 4,000+ attendees on our heritage waterfront at Salamanca. We feature vocal ensembles of all musical genres such as Gondwana Voices, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Choir, The Australian Girls’ Choir, Suede, Melbourne University Choir, The Spooky Men and many others. We offer a diverse and inclusive range of activities from Professional Development to short courses in hip hop and cabaret.
Taking our home in Hobart’s CBD and cultural wharf precinct, with a snow-capped Mt Wellington as a backdrop, visitors are in walking distance of almost every event. The magic of our heritage city on the banks of the River Derwent and the proximity to fine food, wine, wilderness and adventure, makes the Festival of Voices the ideal opportunity for a holiday with family or friends.
