Festival Major Workshop Program

Each year the Festival engages inspiring national and international artists to work with singers in our Major Workshop Program.The Major Workshop Program runs over the five days of the Festival and culminates in the Festival Finale Concert at the Federation Concert Hall.

The Major Workshop Program aims to:

  • Give singers the opportunity to work with exceptional artists and teachers
  • Unite singers from across Australia to form dynamic Festival choirs
  • Inspire singers with new repertoire and skills
  • Celebrate the power of the voice

    The 2010 Festival partners with University of Tasmania Conservatorium

    In 2010 all adult Major Workshops will be accredited courses through UTAS Conservatorium of Music (No HECS fee apply to these workshops). Music and listening material will be sent to participant’s pre the commencement of the workshop.

    Young Voices 10-16yrs

    Conducted by Lyn Williams and assisted by Dan Walker (Aus)

    The Young Voices workshops are a unique opportunity for children aged 10 - 16 to sing with children from across Australia. Approximately 220 singers will have the time of their lives - and perform at the Federation Concert Hall in the Festival Finale Concert! Lyn Williams, acclaimed youth choral director will be conducting the workshop and her choir Gondwana Voices will be joining her in the workshop.  Give your child the opportunity to sing alongside some of Australia’s finest young singers. Australian composer Dan Walker will be assisting in the workshops so our young singers will also have the opportunity of learning pieces directly from the composer. Not to be missed.     Contemporary A cappella 16yrs

    Conducted by Austin Willacy (USA)

    This workshop is designed for singers, of all abilities, who want to explore the potential of the voice and the magnificence of harmonies, working with contemporary/pop/rock compositions and expanding the skills of singers. Join Victorian choirs Suara and Harambee (as seen on Channel 7 Battle of the Choirs) for this workshop – which is bound to inspire singers with the pure wonder of voices working together. Austin's 'voice only' track is featured on our front page.

    Opera / Choral 16yrs +

    Conducted by Simon Kenway (Aus)

    We are excited to be able to offer choristers this opportunity to experience a whole new kind of repertoire. This workshop is for singers who are confident sight-readers and are ready to have fun singing. Simon is immensely experienced and will take singers on a challenging and fun journey onto the world of popular opera choruses.

    Gospel Choir 16yrs +

    Conducted by Myron Butler & co facilitated by Timberlyn Butler

    We are delighted to announce the return of Grammy Award-winning singer/ songwriter and perfomer Myron and his wife Timberlyn Butler. Both are extremely talented musicians and wonderful teachers. Myron’s passion for gospel is vibrantly transmitted to singers in his workshop and those who participate will have an unforgettable experience of working with a rising gospel legend. Hobart has a huge tradition of gospel singing spearheaded by Dr Andrew Legg. The Southern Gospel Choir will form the core of this workshop so come along and join a wealth of singing experience.

    Short Courses

    The Short Course program is your opportunity to work with our guest artists, learn new vocal skills and sing with your friends. Come as a group of four and get the group discount. The Short Courses are all two-hour sessions.

    Singing for Blokes – with Stephen Taberner

    Fact: more men need to sing in this world! So we have asked Stephen Taberner, founder and director of the infamous Spooky Men’s Chorale,  to help us do just that. Stephen is friendly, funny and very talented. He understands blokes and how to get them singing. Throw caution to the wind, bring a mate, and bring your son. Enjoy a workshop of male vocal camaraderie. This workshop is for men only.

    Early Gospel – with Tony Backhouse

    Tony Backhouse has probably introduced more people to the physical pleasures of singing gospel music than anyone else in Australasia.’ Tony will share his tremendous talent with singers of all skill levels as he unlocks the voice and the spirit of early gospel music.

    Singing Like a Bloke - for blokes of all genders – with Stephen Taberner and the Spooky Men’s Chorale

    "We are the Spooky Men.We dream of mastodons. Practice mysterious handshakes. And we can grow beards, if we want to..."

    This is a chance to sing with Stephen Taberner, AND the Spooky Men’s Chorale. This workshop is for ‘men of all genders’ (that’s you too, girls!) and will be a great opportunity for the whole family to have lots of fun. For singers of all abilities.

    Pop A Cappella – with Austin Willacy

    International Festival Guest artist Austin Willacy, of the acclaimed a cappella group the House Jacks from the USA, knows how to teach. Be prepared to learn some of the latest hits and explore how to use the voice as an instrument, with vocal percussion, beat boxing and even guitar and trumpet sounds – all of which will add a huge depth to your a cappella repertoire.

    A Day to Sing – with Kavisha Mazzella, Stephen Taberner & Tony Backhouse

    Friday is a GREAT day to sing! We have gathered three of Australia’s iconic community choir conductors and brought them together for a one-day workshop, crossing three vocal styles. These artists have made huge contributions to the development of community choirs across the country and we are tremendously pleased to present them together for this day.

    It is an all-day package, each artist will present one session. BYO lunch, morning tea provided.
